how to get a good spot in line at an estate sale (without camping out overnight)

Published September 13, 2026 by EstateEntry

The classic estate-sale image — lawn chairs, thermoses, strangers bonding at 5am — is fading. Not because early birds stopped caring, but because the tooling caught up.

The old way

Companies historically managed first-entry with a paper clipboard: show up early, get a number written on your hand, hope nobody disputes the order. It works badly at scale. Arguments over who arrived first are common, and serious shoppers just don't show up because they can't spare the afternoon to wait.

The new way: claim your spot online

Three platforms do this. Pickerty and EstateScale's Virtual Line are the better-known names. EstateEntry offers advance reservation plus a door check-in QR, so you can see your position and an estimated entry time while you wait in your car with climate control.

How it actually works

  • Register on the sale page days before the event. You'll get a line position immediately, based on when you registered — not when you arrive.
  • Arrive at opening and check in by QR code on your phone.
  • If someone ahead of you bails, the platform auto-promotes the next shopper — no-shows don't stall the line.

Is it fair?

Positions are timestamp ordering. First person to claim a spot gets #1. Nobody can pay to move up, so the rank is exactly what it says: who wanted to come, in order.

What about cash sales and walk-ins?

Companies still welcome walk-ins; the reservation just handles the first-hour crush. If you didn't pre-register, line up behind the digital queue and you'll usually still get in within the morning.

Bottom line

If the sale offers a reservation, take it. You'll save an hour of waiting and get in at roughly the same time you would have — without the folding chair.
